The Fitted Rigging House has received Heritage Lottery Fund support of £4.8million

26 January 2017

Last week it was announced that the Heritage Lottery Fund has provided initial support of £4.8 million for our new project – The Fitted Rigging House..

Tracey Crouch – Minister for Sport, Tourism, attended the announcement and walked through the Grade I listed building to capture what we will be renovated and spoke to HLF, stating: “This funding will not only help preserve our wonderful maritime heritage at Chatham, but allow The Dockyard to be fit for purpose and serve the community in the future.”

The Fitted Rigging House is situated along Anchor Wharf, and was used as a general store for equipment to fit out newly built ships. The top half of the building is currently under -used with only the front ground floor used as The Dockyard’s library and collections, and also houses the Steam Steel and Submarine gallery.

Plans are to renovate part of the building to provide space for commercial tenancy, which will in turn secure the longer term financial future for The Historic Dockyard.  The project will also improve volunteer facilities, providing training and social spaces and increase access to our internationally significant library and archive.

“We particularly like their ideas for creating a volunteers’ centre and providing opportunities for people to learn key heritage building skills.”Stuart McLeod, Head of HLF South East

Here at The Historic Dockyard we are looking forward to starting this new project and excited to share with you all the process and ongoing changes here!
