Heritage Open Days: Royal Dockyard Tour

11 Sep - 12 Sep 2023

Free

Discover over 400 years of shipbuilding, ropemaking and pioneering technology. A unique opportunity to experience the current site using amazing architecture to illustrate the development of the Royal Dockyard.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham is the most complete Dockyard of the Age of Sail. As one of the Royal Dockyards, it was at the heart of Royal Navy shore support, providing the facilities to build, repair and maintain ships. By the mid-18th Century, it had developed into one of the largest industrial organisations employing thousands of skilled workers in a vast number of trades.

You will have the chance to experience over 400 years of Dockyard history through the eyes of one of our very knowledgeable volunteers, a former Dockyard apprentice and worker themselves.

They will take you on a journey through the expansion of the Dockyard and the various shipbuilding and rope making techniques that were developed during that time.

You will be guided on a 60-minute walking tour around the Dockyard. The route is accessible and largely flat, but the walking surface varies. Please note this tour takes place in outside spaces only.
