Commissioner’s House Rooftop Tours

26 Jun 2025

Separately Ticketed

A rare chance to explore the rooftop of Commissioner’s House, the oldest intact naval residence in the country.

Built in 1704 for Captain George St Lo, Commissioner’s House has stood largely unchanged for over 300 years. As the official residence of the Dockyard Commissioner, it played a pivotal role in British naval history, overseeing the construction of iconic vessels like HMS VICTORY and serving as a strategic command centre during both World Wars.

Over the next 18 months, we are embarking on an ambitious preservation project to protect this extraordinary building for generations to come. The project is backed by generous support from several Trusts and Foundations, but additional funding is needed to complete the work and secure the building’s long-term future.

For a limited time only, we are offering exclusive roof access as part of this project. Join Nigel Howard, Assistant Director – Historic Buildings and Projects, for a guided tour that offers breath taking views of the Dockyard and rare insights into its history. You’ll see first-hand why preserving Commissioner’s House is so important.

All proceeds from the tour will go directly towards the restoration project, meaning your participation directly contributes to safeguarding this irreplaceable piece of naval heritage.
