Railway Operating DAYS

Savour the bygone age of industrial working railways when heritage locomotives ran through the dockyard.

See diesel locomotive ‘Overlord’ running through the site, passing our three iconic ships. You can also chat to our knowledgeable volunteers, see inside the loco shed, and see the work being carried out to restore and maintain the heritage fleet.

About the Dockyard’s Railway

At its peak, it was estimated that there were approximately 17 miles of standard gauge railway within the Dockyard. Today, there is just under 1 mile of track remaining. The section (laid tramway style) starts just outside the Historic Dockyard (adjacent to No. 7 Slip) and runs through the middle of the site to the far end of Anchor Wharf.

2026 Railway Operating Days:

Please Note

The Dockyard’s railway is used for demonstration only and is unable to carry passengers.

The railway is operated by volunteers. Occasionally, crew shortages, mechanical difficulties, or adverse weather conditions may force us to alter or cancel an advertised event.

Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust cannot guarantee the times that the locomotive and/or crane will operate. Published lists of locomotives planned to be operating on any day are indicative only and subject to change without notice.
