The driver’s decision will be final for those permitted onto the footplate.

About the Engine

Take the controls of Peckett No.1631 ‘Marcia’, who is one of the UK’s smallest standard-gauge steam engines in operation.

‘Marcia’ was bought privately in 2024 and is visiting The Historic Dockyard Chatham courtesy of the Owner and The Kent and East Sussex Railway.

NB. The Dockyard’s railway is used for demonstration only and is unable to carry additional passengers.

About the Dockyard’s Railway

At its peak, it was estimated that there were approximately 17 miles of standard-gauge railway within the Dockyard. Today, there is just under 1 mile of track remaining. The section (laid tramway style) starts just outside the Historic Dockyard (adjacent to No.7 Slip) and runs through the middle of the site to the far end of Anchor Wharf.

Please Note

Please note, the railway is operated by volunteers. Occasionally, crew shortages, mechanical difficulties, or adverse weather conditions may force us to alter or cancel an advertised event.

CHDT cannot guarantee the times that the locomotive and/or crane will operate. Published lists of locomotives planned to be operating on any day are indicative only and subject to change without notice.

About the Show

In Operation

Peckett No.1631 ‘Marcia’

Built in Bristol in 1923, the 0-4-0T engine spent 40 years in industrial use across the UK before entering preservation on the Kent and East Sussex Railway.

‘Marcia’s’ working career included stints at the West of Scotland Shipbreaking Co and the Manchester Oxide Company, where it was given the name ‘Marcia’ after Marcia Clayton, who was the wife of the company’s Managing Director.

The Locomotive was a regular sight on the Kent and East Sussex Railway in the 1970s and 80s before being withdrawn from service in 1982 for restoration, which was completed in 2011.

Today, the engine is still based at The Kent and East Sussex Railway and is owned privately by Andy Hardy and Rapido Trains.

‘Marcia’ is one of the UK’s smallest standard-gauge steam engines in operation.
