The Salute to the ’40s festival returns to The Historic Dockyard Chatham for one last spectacular weekend this September, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
For nearly two decades, this beloved 1940s festival has brought the spirit of the era to life. In 2025, it will bow out in style, bigger and bolder than ever. This finale offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to honour the wartime generation, celebrating the camaraderie, resilience, and enduring spirit that defined the 1940s.

Salute to the ‘40s is a celebratory and inclusive event. We ask all visitors, participants, performers, staff and volunteers to follow our Code of Conduct to help us create the best possible atmosphere. We reserve the right to refuse entry.


This year Salute to the ’40s will honour the 80th anniversaries of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) and VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day).

Entertainment Guide

Musical Extravaganza
Step on to the dance floor as the main stage comes alive with the swinging beats of yesteryear. From jitterbug to jive, immerse yourself in the tunes that once set the world on fire. Let the rhythm transport you to a bygone era.

Classic Cars and Military Vehicles
Head towards the Admiral’s Offices to witness a stunning collection of vintage military and classic cars. Explore the history and craftmanship behind these timeless automobiles that once ruled the roads and the battlefields.

Re-Enactors and Wartime Displays
Prepare to be surrounded by reenactors portraying sweethearts, dreamboats and military personnel. Learn about history firsthand and gain an appreciation for the resilience of past generations.

1940s Living History Display
Step back into the 1940s with immersive displays and activities. Enjoy authentic cookery demonstrations, experience life inside an RAF Fighter Command Operations Room, and join in a lively VJ Day party and sing-along. This area brings wartime history to life through interactive sessions and engaging performances for all ages.

Drive a Diesel Locomotive
Climb aboard WD 42 “Overlord” for a hands-on diesel driving locomotive experience. Step into the cab, take the controls under the guidance of our expert crew, and discover what it’s like to be at the helm of this historic locomotive.
£10 per person.
No additional experience required – over 18s only.

Andrew Choong ‘Dockyard at War’ Talk
In 1939, Chatham was one of the Royal Navy’s key home bases, serving as a major manning depot with dockyard facilities capable of repairing heavy cruisers. Targeted heavily by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz, it sustained damage but operations continued. This talk explores the Dockyard’s crucial wartime role, from the exploits of ships and submarines built here to the vital logistical support it provided to Allied victory.

Time Travelling Performances
Marvel at captivating performances ranging from acrobatics to enchanting storytelling. Witness artists bringing the past to life creating an atmosphere that will leave you spellbound. Don’t miss the incredible display of model railways and boats that will take you on a journey through time.

Vintage Market in Tinker’s Alley
Take a stroll through Tinker’s Alley and the Village Green where you’ll find the vintage market. Indulge in a treasure hunt for unique, hand crafted, and vintage design-led pieces. From retro fashion to timeless crafts, there’s something for every vintage enthusiast.

Family Friendly Fun & Games
There’s entertainment for all ages. Join the dance lessons, participate in good old-fashioned games and be delighted by family friendly performances. The vintage festival promises an atmosphere of joy and laughter for every member of your clan.

Food & Drink
You will have worked up quite an appetite by the time you have experienced all the fun on offer, so take a breather and sample some of the great food on offer. The Mess Deck and Wagon Stop restaurants on site will recharge you with traditional Pie & Mash or Fish & Chips and savoury snacks, cakes and ice cream.
There are no rations at this event, you will find various food stalls catering for a wide range of tastes and dietary requirements across the Historic Dockyard Chatham site.

Ropemaking Demonstrations
Rope has been made at Chatham Dockyard for over 400 years. Today Chatham is the only one of the original four Royal Navy Ropeyards to remain in operation.
Witness the craft of ropemaking for yourself during our live demonstrations by the Master Ropemakers.

Arrive at Salute to the ’40s in style with a unique river cruise from Jetstream Tours. Departing Southend Pier, you’ll travel the length of the River Medway, passing the SS Richard Montgomery, Sheerness Docks, estuary islands and the historic Upnor Castle before arriving at The Historic Dockyard Chatham.

We have a variety of catering options on offer including our famous Fish & Chips or Pie & Mash from the Mess Deck Restaurant. We have freshly made sandwiches, sausage rolls and pies available in the Wagon Stop Canteen, as well as outlets serving Indian Street Food, Greek Wraps, Sausages and Churros.
Unfortunately, we can not allow alcohol to be brought in to, or out of the site (a range of premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be on sale from our bars)
The gates open at 10am. Please have your ticket information at hand ready to be processed and to receive your wristband
This event finishes after the finale at 5pm.

This offer is open to those who hold a current higher rate of DLA or other UK government approved supporting evidence of their requirement for a personal assistant.
Carer tickets can only be issued against general entry tickets.
IMPORTANT: This offer is only available to those people that would be unable to attend the event without a full time assistant.
To apply for a carer/ personal assistant ticket, please follow the procedure below:
– Buy a standard general admission ticket for the person you are caring for as they require ticket for entry.
– On the day of event please bring a copy of your letter of award for DLA (or equivalent) and our team will process your ticket for you. You cannot buy your carer/personal assistant ticket in advance
Parking for Salute to the ’40s is within the main Historic Dockyard visitor car park with overflow parking provided nearby at the University of Greenwich (Pembroke). Our team will be managing the car parking and will direct you to the nearest vacant space on arrival.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham’s nearest train station is Chatham Station which is regularly served by Southeastern High Speed travelling to/from London St Pancras as well as regular services via London Victoria and Charing Cross.
Important information about walking from Chatham Station – It’s around a 25 minute walk from Chatham Station to The Historic Dockyard Chatham. For Salute to the ’40s ticket holders, the Main Gate will be open and this is the closest entrance from the station. If you’d prefer not to walk, the station is well served by local bus routes and taxis are also available (just 5 to 6 minutes by car).
We welcome dogs to this event (some even dress up) but please note that we do not allow entry for dogs inside our galleries and restaurants (with the exception of guide dogs).
Please also be aware that this is a busy and loud event so some dogs may find this unfamiliar.
Yes, we have made the site wheelchair friendly but please lookout for the railway tracks to ensure wheels do not get stuck. There may be areas that get busy from time to time, but our staff are on hand to help with any issues.

Tickets for Salute to the ’40s are non-refundable. In exceptional circumstances, tickets may be transferred to another date, subject to a £10 administration fee.
For your security random bag checks will be in operation conducted by our security team. We advise the following:

Weapons Checks:
The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust welcomes the carrying and display of deactivated and replica weapons by our Military reenactors. For the safety and security of our visitors a weapons check will take place on arrival. Entry onto the site will not be permitted until all weapons have been checked and tagged by the Security team.

The reference number you have received is valid for everyone in your group. If you are arriving at separate times, please ensure that members of your party have access to the reference number.
We reserve the right to refuse admission to the venue at our discretion and any person who fails to comply with instructions from a member of Dockyard staff or other person acting on behalf of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust may be asked to leave. In addition, anyone found to be causing damage to the venue, the venue infrastructure, causing harm to any other person onsite, behaving in an illegal, anti-social or aggressive manner, appearing to be under the influence of drink or drugs or in breach of these conditions will be ejected and reported to the police.
No alcohol to be brought into our site. Any alcohol consumed onsite must be purchased from one of our licensed venues.
