VJ Day 80th Anniversary Commemoration

15 Aug 2025

Included in ticket
Union Jack

Join us as we mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Over Japan Day (VJ Day) – the day that brought the Second World War to an end on 15 August 1945.

While millions celebrated peace after six long years of conflict, VJ Day also serves as a time to reflect on the enormous human cost of war. Over 90,000 British troops were casualties in the war against Japan, with 30,000 losing their lives and thousands more held as prisoners of war.

To honour this significant moment in history, a ceremonial flag-raising will take place at Museum Square, led by the Mayor of Medway, Councillor Trevor Clarke.

A specially commissioned short film featuring The Peace Poem, created by a local artist with contributions from the people of Medway, will be available via Medway Council’s website and social media channels on the day.
