Fitted Rigging House

The Fitted Rigging House traditionally provided accommodation for dockyard riggers to make warships’ standing rigging. Thanks to significant recent restoration, the Grade I listed, Scheduled Ancient Monument now provides state of the art facilities for modern day use.

We have two brand new rooms available for private hire, complete with breakout and meeting areas. These rooms are perfect for training days, board meetings and presentations.

Commissioner's House

... Britain's oldest naval building

Built in 1704 for Captain George St. Lo, this grand mansion is the oldest intact naval building in Great Britain. The Resident Commissioner was an important personage with direct responsibility for running the Dockyard. His house stands at the centre of the site and today provides impressive spaces for private hire which can be completely tailored for your event. Commissioner’s House also has a spacious walled garden, with an excellent view of Rochester, and a private bar.

Legend suggests that Oliver Cromwell watched from Commissioner’s Garden while Rochester surrendered to his forces.

The Ballroom

Beautifully light and airy, Commissioner’s House Ballroom is complete with gorgeous Georgian décor and a sprung dancefloor. The Ballroom leads on to a patio and opens into Commissioner’s Garden.

Namur Room

18th century warship HMS Namur was a 90-gun second rate ship of the line built at Chatham. She fought in many battles and her honours even surpass those of Nelson’s famous HMS Victory.

The timbers from Namur were discovered beneath the floor of the Wheelrights’ Shop in 1995. Namur’s story, along with her restored timbers, form the centrepiece of our Command of the Oceans gallery – our meeting room, located above the gallery, has been named in her honour.

Adjacent to our main visitors’ entrance and Mess Deck restaurant, the Namur room is completely private space and available for room hire only.

Notice to Visitors

Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust welcomes the news that museums and visitor attractions are able to reopen to visitors from 4 July.

We are actively planning to welcome visitors back to the Dockyard as soon as we are safely able to do so but this will be some time after 4 July.

We will make a further announcement to confirm the exact date as soon as we can.

In the meantime, much of Dockyard life has never stopped. Master Ropemakers has started operating again and we are taking forward bookings for filming, group travel and hospitality, including weddings. Call the Midwife Official Location Tours will resume shortly.

We would like to thank all our visitors for their understanding during this challenging period.
