Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust signs Armed Forces Covenant

Today, on Armistice Day, Admiral Sir Trevor Soar KCB OBE DL, Chair of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, formally signed the Armed Forces Covenant, reaffirming the Dockyard’s long-standing commitment to supporting the UK’s Armed Forces community. Commodore Tim Green CBE ADC RN signed on behalf of the Armed Forces.
By signing the Covenant, the Trust recognises the vital contribution that serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families make to both the nation and the Historic Dockyard. The Trust has pledged to uphold the principles of the Covenant through a series of commitments including:
- Promoting the Armed Forces: promoting the fact that we are an Armed Forces-friendly organisation, recognising the strong connection between our 400-year history and the armed forces. We will display the Armed Forces Covenant logo across our literature, website and visitor areas to raise awareness to all who come to the Historic Dockyard.
- Employment: supporting the employment of serving personnel and veterans in both paid and voluntary roles, recognising military skills and qualifications in our recruitment and selection process and offering a warm, friendly and inclusive environment. We will share job and volunteering opportunities regularly with local units.
- Cadets: supporting local cadet units and providing opportunities for them to take part in events that celebrate the armed forces.
- Events: hosting a local Armed Forces Day event each year with free entry for the public and priority tickets for service personnel, or where this is not possible, support other local organisers and their events. Honouring the service and commitment of armed forces personnel, past and present, through participation in Armistice Day with an annual service at the National Destroyer Memorial.
- Commercial support: Providing discounted annual tickets to serving members of the armed forces, veterans and reservists (on production of ID) for the ID holder and up to 4 family members).
- Governance – we will have a naval officer on the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust Board of Management.
Admiral Sir Trevor Soar said: “The Historic Dockyard’s story is inseparable from that of the Royal Navy. Signing the Armed Forces Covenant today, on Armistice Day and during the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War is a significant moment. It not only reflects our proud history but also reaffirms our commitment to those who serve and have served.”
The signing stands as a renewed pledge in the Dockyard’s centuries-old relationship with the Armed Forces.
