Dock Chat with CEO Richard Morsley

The latest episode of Dock Chat sees the Trust’s CEO, Richard Morsley, sit down to reflect on 2024 as an important year for The Historic Dockyard Chatham, as it commemorated 40 years since the Royal Navy left. He also looks towards 2025, focussing on strategic direction and long-term projects for the Trust.

2024’s 40th anniversary was a momentous moment in the Trust’s story but is also significant to Medway and the surrounding area. Therefore three objectives were set for the year:

  1. Commemorate the closure of Chatham Dockyard by the Royal Navy on 30 March 1984.
  2. Celebrate the achievements of the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust.
  3. Engage with the local Medway community.

Dockyard40

Dockyard40 was the umbrella for the programme of events and activities that took place during the anniversary year. The Dockyard worked with and was supported by the local community to communicate its three objectives.

The programme included Ghost Ships, Armed Forces Day, and Salute to the ’40s. There were also insightful exhibitions that plotted the story of the Dockyard’s closure and the change to the Dockyard site. The touring timeline exhibition visited local community venues in Medway.

Dockyard40 communicated that the trust is a charity that is responsible for the preservation of the Dockyard and custodians of the 400-year story.

Looking to the Future

The second part of the podcast looks towards the future. Not only does he look at the exciting opportunities on the horizon but also challenges that will require navigating.

This year will see the introduction of the new 10-year strategy. The strategy has created an opportunity for Trustees, senior leaders, staff, and volunteers to work with a single and common focus to shape the Trust’s vision for the next decade.
