The Historic Dockyard Chatham awarded accreditation for its family friendly café

Mess Deck Restaurant

The Mess Deck Restaurant at The Historic Dockyard Chatham has achieved accreditation with the Kids in Museums Family Café Standard. The Family Café Standard is a benchmark that recognises cafés at museums and cultural attractions that are great for families.

Based on feedback from families, the standard rates cafés on the quality of their online information and promotion, space and facilities, choice of food, affordability, sustainability and staff training. It includes everything from children’s meals and activities in the café to food waste and sourcing sustainable and high welfare ingredients.

The Mess Deck Restaurant proudly offers a variety of great British food with a delicious menu of locally sourced meals and sandwiches freshly prepared at the Dockyard each day. Enjoy favourites such as our renowned ‘Fish and Chips’.

For over 20 years, charity Kids in Museums has worked to make museums open and welcoming to all children, young people and families. It launched the Family Café Standard in July 2023 with catering company Benugo.

Museums applied for accreditation in November/December 2023 and completed an assessment in January, successfully achieving accreditation this month. Accredited venues are listed on the Kids in Museums website and able to use the Family Café Standard badge.
