The Historic Dockyard Chatham Announces Music and Entertainment Acts for Salute to the β40s

Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust is thrilled to announce the complete line-up of acts for the highly anticipated “Salute to the ’40s” event at The Historic Dockyard Chatham on 14 and 15 September 2024. This celebration of the iconic decade will feature an array of talented performers, each bringing their unique flair to the festivities. From classic 1940s jazz, swing, and big band songs to captivating theatrical performances and family-friendly entertainment, this year’s event promises a memorable experience for all ages.
This dazzling event pays tribute to the spirit of the 1940s and honours the incredible contributions of artists from this cherished era. Eventgoers will immerse themselves in music, dance, and nostalgia with the just-unveiled lineup.

MAIN STAGE
The Main Stage features an impressive lineup which will transport audiences back to the sounds of the 1940s. Headlining the event on Saturday is The Glenn Miller Orchestra, under the direction of Ray McVay, showcasing their extensive collection of classic arrangements including the beloved “Moonlight Serenadeβ.
Headlining the Main Stage on Sunday are the D-Day Darlings, the UK’s premier wartime music group, who reached the final of ITVβs Britainβs Got Talent in 2018. They will delight audiences and pay tribute to veterans with their heartfelt performances inspired by Dame Vera Lynn.
Additionally, jazz musician Randolph Matthews and the New Season Band pay tribute to the great pioneers of jazz, while The Bluebird Belles bring the glamour of the era with their intricate harmonies.
Also performing are MEDWAY CAN Sing, The Knightingales, and The Music Man Project, all contributing to an unforgettable celebration of 1940s music and culture.
MATADOR STAGE
The Matador Stage offers a mix of engaging performances that encapsulate the essence of 1940s entertainment. The Side by Side Jazz Duo delivers captivating renditions of jazz standards and modern classics, while the award-winning duo Sparky & Sprite entertains with their versatile performances of 1940s music.
DJ Reverend Boogie and DJ Miss Aloha bring their expertise in swing dance, offering visitors the chance to partake in dance lessons accompanied by an upbeat selection of music from yesteryear.
Additionally, the community choir MEDWAY CAN Sing showcases various talents throughout the weekend, with performances from the Medway Community Gospel Choir, Brompton Military Wives Choir, and Vision Signing Choir.
NEW FOR 2024 – FLOATING ACTS & FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT
Alongside the music stages, there will be a variety of new floating acts and family entertainment for 2024, promising magical experiences for visitors of all ages.
Rimski & Handkerchief dazzle audiences with their whimsical musical machines, offering a playful yet profound performance.
Pirates of the Carabina bring a vibrant circus atmosphere, featuring innovative acts paired with captivating stories and live music.
The Bubble Wizard enchants the crowd with incredible bubble creations of all sizes, while Mark’s Magic Mayhem blends circus skills and playful antics to delight spectators.
Finally, Storytelling with Dragonfly Tales captivates young and old alike with their interactive tale about the Blitz, ensuring a memorable experience rich in history and entertainment.
TOURS & EXPERIENCES
NEW FOR 2024 – Salute to the β40s attendees can enjoy an unforgettable experience aboard the Sailing Barge Greta, setting sail from Thunderbolt Pier at The Historic Dockyard Chatham to Upnor Castle and back, all within a delightful 1-hour and 20-minute cruise. Tickets can be pre-booked online and are available for just Β£22 per person.
Visitors can also take a break from the busy streets of the Dockyard and relax with a delicious Afternoon Tea in the Commissionerβs House Ballroom. The Commissionerβs House, the oldest intact naval building in Great Britain, provides the perfect setting for this quintessentially British treat. Booking is available online for Β£25 per person.
For military enthusiasts, there are thrilling Jeep Tours along the picturesque riverside and through the historic streets of the Dockyard. Additionally, they can immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the past with the Air Raid Shelter Experience, which transports attendees back to an era when families sought refuge underground, bringing the wartime experience to life.
For fans of the hit BBC TV show, there is an opportunity to experience the charm of Call the Midwife on an exclusive Taster Tour. This tour takes participants to the enchanting locations where the beloved series was filmed at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Guided by a costumed midwife, the cobbled streets and buildings of βPoplarβ will feel familiar, along with iconic spots like the Grosvenor Hotel and βChummyβs Hill.β
