Sewing Machine Day…

Happy Sewing Machine Day!

When the Trust began at The Dockyard, they came across lots of these beautiful machines in the Sail and Colour loft.

This is an early example of a sewing machine that was used in the Sail and Colour Loft. You can see this sewing machine in person at our Steam, Steel and Submarines gallery.

Machines like these were introduced into the Dockyard in 1881 to help speed up the process of making flags and colours (signals) used on board ships. Gradually the number of female workers increased and they became known as the ‘Ladies of the Sail Loft’.  For more information about them, visit our blog here.

Have you ever sewn a flag or signal?
