Supporting Home Educators Brick by Brick

As part of our charitable objective to support underserved and overlooked communities, we hosted a Brickwrecks-inspired Home Education Day on 25th April and we were delighted to welcome 78 home educators. The day offered the chance for those within the home education community to learn about the science of ship making, construct LEGO® ships, and put them to the test in our Tow Tank. It was a perfect blend of fun and foundational STEM learning.

Participants also took part in an illustration-based Arts Award session, which told the story of HMS EREBUS and HMS TERROR, two of the infamous shipwrecks featured in our Brickwrecks: Sunken Ships in LEGO® Bricks exhibition.

This day was made possible through the generosity of our sponsor, Kent Reliance, whose support allowed us to offer free spaces to both home educators and Arts Award participants. We were especially pleased to welcome Honor Chivers, Grants Manager at Kent Reliance Community Foundation, who joined us on the day to meet the families and see the programme in action.

The feedback from families was wonderful, with one parent saying:

“Home educating is expensive, especially as one parent had to stop working to be at home full time, so it’s critical for families like ours.”

Another added:

“It allows us to experience immersive days like today that would otherwise be unobtainable.”

Supporting education where it’s needed most

Our ambitious learning programme goes beyond days like this, working year-round to support young people, including:

We partner with schools across Medway facing growing challenges, including reduced funding, high staff turnover, and a greater need for pupil premium and EHCP provision.

Many of the families we serve are also coping with the cost-of-living crisis, long-term health issues, and limited access to essential council services. According to End Child Poverty, over 30.6% of children in Medway are currently living in poverty.
