Why was HMS Invincible so special?

The Royal Navy’s first HMS Invincible was a very special ship. Her hull was wide in the bow (front) and narrow in the stern (back), this made her move quickly in the water. She had a narrow and vertical rudder so she could turn without slowing down. This made her incredibly nippy.

She had 74 powerful guns over two decks and because she was so nippy, she could take on bigger, three decked flagships that had more than 100 guns.

Find out more about HMS Invincible in Diving Deep: HMS Invincible 1744, showing at The Historic Dockyard Chatham until 20 November 2022.
