Join us for a summer of adventures as we explore the Science of the Sea.
Fun activities include ‘Ship Building Challenge’ where you’ll build and test your own ship in our unique Dockyard tow tank; ‘Ready Aim Fire!’ – rocket firing, inspired by HMS Cavalier’s Seacat missiles, and ‘Gun Deck Challenge’ preparing and firing model cannons, inspired by the guns (cannons) onboard HMS Victory. Grown ups, you will have fun with these activities too!
Stimulated by the National Maritime Museum model collection, get hands to compete, construct and test prototype hull shapes and propulsion systems against their peers. Facing the challenge of the tow tank wind and wave machine, children will soon realise what a difference the knowledge of naval architecture makes to the performance of a ship.
The Ship Building Challenge runs on:
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a Rocket and Missile? Taking inspiration from the Seacat Missiles aboard HMS Cavalier, the Royal Navy’s last operational Second World War Destroyer, it’s a chance to find out about Missile and Rocket design by firing your own rocket from our specially designed air pressure rocket launching system. Will you hit the target and sink the battleship?!
Ready, Aim, Fire! runs on:
Ahoy! Straight off the gun deck of an 18th century warship, practice to create the perfect propellant, then launch a ball bearing from the chemical cannon to outgun the other gun crews.
